This private IP address, just like the well known 192.168.0.1, is used in most networks and small businesses, because an ISP typically assigns a unique IP address to a device which is used to connect to the internet. Once you know your default router password and are able to connect to administrative interface, it is a very good practice to change your default router password to a secure one. It is not easy to remember complex password different from a default one, but a password manager application like KeePassX or similar would help a lot with this. Leaving default password on your router leaves large security hole in your network. Default User Name and Password

For routers which use 192.168.1.254 as a default address the most common default user name and passwords are admin/ and admin/admin.

For Netopia routers admin/admin or admin/1234 should be used for default user and password.
